The title of your vehicle is a legal document that shows property ownership. It is usually issued by a state agency. To buy or sell a car, the title must be transferred to the new owner. It is important that the title is filled out with all important and corrent information.
Some states do not issue titles past a certain year. In these cases usually the registration is transferred. The information below will concentrate on title transfers.
- Check for liens
- Check if the title is Branded. Usually stamped “Salvage” Rebuilt”
- Use black or blue pens
- Be sure the VIN on the title matches the one located on the dashboard.
- Compare the odometer reading to the mileage marked on the title.
- Check for “TMU” (true mileage unknown) on title.
